WHAT ARE MUSLIM PRAYER TIMES?

Islamic Prayer Times — complete definition

Islamic prayer times are the daily moments for the five obligatory prayers: Fajr (true dawn), Dhuhr (after solar noon), Asr (afternoon—when a shadow reaches 1× or 2× its length), Maghrib (sunset) and Isha (end of twilight). Many timetables also show Shurūq (sunrise) to indicate the end of the Fajr window, as well as optional Imsak (a prudential buffer before Fajr).

  • Computation: astronomical sun positions with recognized presets for Fajr/Isha (e.g., MWL 18°/17°, ISNA 15°/15°, Egypt 19.5°/17.5°, Karachi 18°/18°, Umm al-Qura with Isha as a fixed 90–120 min after Maghrib). Asr is by shadow ratio: 1× (majority) or 2× (Hanafi).
  • Local variation: latitude/longitude, altitude, time zone/DST, refraction model, and rounding policies. At high latitudes, special adjustments (middle-of-night, 1/7 of night, angle-based) are used per local authority.
  • Best practice: follow your local mosque/authority; match the method and Asr convention stated on their official timetable.
